Traditional Korean Medicine
Treatment: The benefits of healing extend to other affected areas

One of the most frequent questions I receive as a licensed acupuncturist is “What types of illnesses do you treat?” And people are alarmed when I mention PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which is found in 1 of 15 women. PCOS is a disorder caused by hormonal imbalances in the body. Since the body is interconnected, an imbalance of one hormone triggers the imbalance of another like a domino effect. This is why women who suffer from PCOS will exhibit a range of symptoms such as, hirsutism (hair growth in the face, abdominal region and chest), deepening of the voice, weight gain, irregular periods, infertility, acne, hair loss, and depression.

PCOS is usually detected through a blood test, ultrasound, or pelvic examination, which reveals abnormal hormone levels and numerous cysts on the ovaries. Conventional treatments for PCOS include regular exercise, a proper diet, and medication to regulate hormones such as, contraceptives, antiandrogen agents, and hypoglycemic agents.

On the other hand, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments for PCOS include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional counseling. Patients who suffer from PCOS experience a blockage in their blood flow due to the many cysts sitting on the ovaries, which in turn prohibits hormones from being released properly. Acupuncture works to promote blood circulation throughout the body by stimulating blood flow to blocked areas, and leads to different types of blood cells performing their specific functions in effected areas. In addition, herbal medicine is prescribed to decrease the size of the cysts (in some cases eliminating them) and regulate the effected hormones. Finally, patients receive nutritional counseling to understand what types of foods aggravate and stimulate the growth of cysts.

When PCOS is treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine, the benefits of healing extend to other affected areas, because the domino effect works in the healing process as well. Women with irregular periods will experience more normal cycles, those struggling with infertility due to PCOS will be able to conceive, acne will clear, and abnormal hair loss or hair growth will disappear.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments go beyond eliminating pain. At Bliss Acupuncture Wellness Clinic we offer treatments that promote healing in a more profound way. Visit us to learn more about how we treat PCOS and other gynecological disorders.
